The standard of entrants was very high and that made the panel’s job tricky – who to choose? How to separate one excellent candidate from another? But in the end, and after a great deal of discussion (and coffee!) we managed it, and we are delighted to offer this opportunity to two very genuine, talented and deserving people.
The Steve Balsamo Scholarship goes to Charlotte House, who has an impressive track record as a performer, but who realised some time ago that her calling is to teach. Charlotte said that if she were to be awarded the scholarship:
“Not only would you be empowering and dramatically changing the course of my own life. You would also be assisting a whole community. A local studio has already agreed for me to use their rehearsal rooms as resident vocal coach. I am truly appreciative of the faith they have in my vision and ability. The owner and I aim to create community based projects to assist the old, down trodden, deprived and the youth. I want to be able to reach as many people as possible and give the very best of me…With your help we can make it happen.”
Well, at VIDLA we are firm believers in ‘making things happen’, and we are delighted to be a part of Charlotte’s vision.
The recipient of The John Owen Jones Award is vocalist Samantha Laurilla, who says:
“I have not been this excited about a new venture in a long time. I really believe that this course is perfect for me and I already feel very passionate about it. I would love to be a qualified singing coach; it is a career that excites and inspires me. My vocal coach changed me as a singer: not only did she teach me theory and technique, but she gave me the confidence to become the vocalist I wanted to be. I would love to be able to give that gift to someone else.”
The panel of judges were bowled over by Samantha’s enthusiasm for her subject, which came across so strongly in her application. Like Charlotte, Samantha will commence her studies with VIDLA on Monday 30th April, and we are looking forward to mentoring her on her journey.
We will be inviting applications for next year’s scholarships from September of this year – please subscribe to this blog to be kept up to date with all the news. In the meanwhile, many congratulations to Charlotte and Samantha – welcome to the VIDLA fold!
